Professor Ingrid Scheffer is a paediatric neurologist at the University of Melbourne whose work together with Professor Sam Berkovic has lead the field of epilepsy genetics research over the last 15 years in collaboration with the Women’s and Children’s Hospital, Adelaide. This collaboration has resulted in identification of the first epilepsy gene and subsequently eight of the fifteen genes currently known. Professor Scheffer received her MBBS from Monash University, trained in paediatrics at the Royal Children’s Hospital, Melbourne, and child neurology at the Great Ormond Street Hospital for Sick Children, London.

She carried out her epilepsy fellowship and PhD on the genetics of epilepsy at the University of Melbourne, Austin Health, under the supervision of Professor Sam Berkovic. Professor Scheffer is a chief investigator on her second NHMRC Program Grant. Professor Scheffer’s research interests include the genetics of epilepsy and febrile seizures, epilepsy syndrome classificaion, novel antiepieptic therapies and autism spectrum disorders.
